The 2023 Dr. Carolyn McCue Award for Woman Cardiologist of the Year
July 21, 2022It is our great honor to announce the 2023 Dr. Carolyn McCue Award for Woman Cardiologist of the Year to Annabelle Santos Volgman, MD, FACC, FAHA. Established in 2008 and funded by a grant from the McCue Family, the McCue Award honors the late Carolyn Moore McCue, MD. Dr. McCue was one of the few female cardiologists of her time and served as the first woman elected president of the Richmond Academy of Medicine. During her 42 years of medical practice at the Medical College of Virginia (MCV, now VCU Health), she also created and chaired MCV’s Pediatric Cardiology Division and played a vital role in establishing pediatric cardiology clinics in medically underserved communities throughout Virginia.
Dr. Volgman will be presented with the Dr. Carolyn McCue Award for Woman Cardiologist of the Year at the Pauley Heart Center Heart Health in Women Symposium in Richmond on Saturday, February. 4th, 2023, where she will also serve as keynote speaker.
Dr. Annabelle Santos Volgman
Born in Quezon City, Philippines, Dr. Annabelle Santos Volgman earned her undergraduate degree from Barnard College, where she graduated with honors. She received her doctorate in medicine from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbian University in New York City. After completing her residency in internal medicine at the University of Chicago, she trained in cardiology and electrophysiology through fellowships at Northwestern University and the Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
Dr. Volgman co-founded the Rush Heart Center for Women, Chicago’s first heart program dedicated exclusively to women, and currently serves as medical director at Rush University. She is the Madeleine and James M. McMullan-Carl E. Eybel, MD, Professor of Excellence in Clinical Cardiology at Rush, and the Vice-Chief for Academic Affairs in the Division of Cardiology. Recognized nationally as a leader in cardiology care and research, Dr. Volgman has built her career around her passion for improving the lives of women and their families by preventing and treating cardiovascular disease.
Having written and published a multitude of abstracts, articles, and OpEds for scientific peers and mass audiences, Dr. Volgman is as passionate in her research as she is in her advocacy for preventing heart disease in women. She has published more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers in high impact cardiology journals such as Circulation and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Subjects of her papers include management of cardiovascular disease in women, management of pregnant women with cardiovascular disease, and the intersection of breast cancer and cardiovascular disease.
Since 2006, Dr. Volgman has been recognized in the annual “Top Doctors” listing in Chicago Magazine and earned similar prestige in Women’s Health Magazine. Her numerous awards include the 2019 WomenHeart Wenger Award for Innovation in Heart Care for Women, the 2020 Woman’s Day Red Dress Award, and the 2021 American Heart Association Outstanding Champion for the Patient/Cause Award. She serves on the national scientific advisory board of WomenHeart and in national leadership committees of the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology. She was chosen as one of Castle Connolly’s 2020 Exceptional Women in Medicine and elected as Governor for the Illinois American College of Cardiology.
